Ignition Repair & Replacement

Key, Cylinder or Steering Lock?

Ignition trouble has a handful of common causes. Keys wear down over years of use, and a worn key stops lifting the wafers inside the cylinder properly, so it turns only after jiggling. Sometimes the fix is simply a freshly cut key made to the factory code rather than copied from the worn one.

Other times the wafers inside the cylinder itself are worn or broken, or the cylinder was forced during an attempted theft. In those cases we rebuild or replace the cylinder. Where we can, we set the new cylinder to your existing key so you are not left carrying one key for the doors and another for the ignition.

If the steering wheel is locked and the key will not turn, try gently turning the wheel left and right while turning the key. If that does not free it, stop forcing it and call us — forcing a jammed ignition is how keys snap off inside it.

Ignition Repair & Replacement FAQ

Why won’t my key turn in the ignition?

The most common causes are a worn key, worn wafers in the cylinder, or a locked steering column. Try turning the wheel while gently turning the key; if that fails, call us before forcing it.

Do I need a new key if you replace the ignition?

Not always. Where possible we match the new cylinder to your existing key so one key still works everything.

Can you repair the ignition where my car is parked?

Yes. We carry cylinders and tools in the van and do the work on site across Columbia and the Midlands.

My key broke off in the ignition — can you get it out?

Yes. We extract broken keys without damaging the cylinder and can cut you a new key the same visit.

Is a locksmith cheaper than the dealer for ignition repair?

Usually, and there is no tow involved. We quote the repair before we start.

How long does an ignition repair take?

Most take about an hour on site. Some vehicles with complex steering columns take longer.
