Mailbox Lock Replacement

Who Handles Your Mailbox Lock?

It depends on the mailbox. For many cluster boxes (CBUs) in newer subdivisions, the Postal Service controls the master lock that opens the front panel, but the lock on your individual compartment belongs to you or your HOA. That compartment lock is the one a locksmith can replace when a key is lost or a new owner moves in.

For apartment wall units and privately owned locking mailboxes, we can replace or rekey the lock directly. Apartment residents should check with their property manager first, since some communities handle mailbox locks themselves or require them to match a building system.

Changing the lock after you move in is sensible for the same reason as rekeying your front door: you don’t know how many copies of the old key are out there, and mail theft often starts with a spare key.

Have a Question?

Mailbox Lock Replacement FAQ

Can a locksmith change my mailbox lock?

Yes, for your individual compartment lock and for private locking mailboxes. The Postal Service controls the master panel on cluster boxes.

I lost my mailbox key — what should I do?

Call us. We open the compartment, replace the lock and give you new keys, usually in a single short visit.

Should I change my mailbox lock when I move?

Yes. You don’t know how many copies of the previous key exist, and a new lock is inexpensive.

Do I need permission for an apartment mailbox?

Check with your property manager first — some communities handle mailbox locks themselves.

Can you rekey instead of replacing?

Many mailbox cam locks are cheaper to replace than rekey; we use whichever is the better value.

How much does a mailbox lock change cost?

It is one of our most affordable services. We quote before we start.
